Prose and Art Books

Katy Calloway is a journalist, community arts activist, and former managing editor of James Island Messenger.

Ellie Maas Davis, a writer, publisher, and book reviewer, has written extensively on the environment and human right and published in a number of anthologies and journals. Her 2009 volume, The Humours of Folly, is a pictorial celebration of Folly Beach.

Richard “Duke” Hagerty paints from dreams and myths, the notion of the shadow self, and the iconography of the Catholic religion. Painting, for him, is a language, a way to express the conflicts and complications of the psyche, his own and those of the culture at large. He divides his time between downtown Charleston and Edisto.

Marsha Pardee, raised on the beach and salt marsh of Folly Island, is a marine ecologist who has spent most of the last thirty years living and working in the British West Indies. ‘Twas a Sight Before Christmas is a beautifully illustrated version of the beloved holiday verse, focusing on marine creatures.
